Day 7 - Message from Pastor

Wednesday's Devotion from Pastor Scott:
6 In Jerusalem, the LORD Almighty will spread a wonderful feast for everyone around the world. It will be a delicious feast of good food, with clear, well-aged wine and choice beef. 7 In that day he will remove the cloud of gloom, the shadow of death that hangs over the earth. 8 He will swallow up death forever! The Sovereign LORD will wipe away all tears. He will remove forever all insults and mockery against his land and people. The LORD has spoken! (Isaiah 25)
The biblical world was one of scarcity.  The day was spent scrounging enough food to feed your family.  Often, this required back breaking work in the heat of the day for all able bodied family members.  And given droughts and famines, even that was not always a guarantee that there would be enough food.

Therefore, when the biblical authors spoke about the Messianic Age and the fullness of the promises of God, it usually included a feast with food beyond measure and wine from the choicest vines.  Psalm 23:5 reads, “You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies.”

They didn’t have Costco.  They didn’t have diet fads.  New Year’s Resolutions did not include losing weight because there was no concern for trans fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, calories, high fructose corn syrup and processed foods.  Welcome to our world!

As we care for our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, we realize that our world is very different from the biblical world. However, the idea of food being a gift is the same.  The question is whether we use that gift or abuse it.

Reminder:

40 DAY RENEWAL CLASS #1 BEGINS TONIGHT!
6:00-7:30PM @ CLC FORUM

Come join us and learn all about eating foods that HEAL the body. This is not a fad or crash diet, this is a nutrition plan for life! See you all there!

The Purpose Driven Life - Finding Your Purpose

CHAPTER 7 - THE REASON FOR EVERYTHING

"The Lord has made everything for his own purposes." Proverbs 16:4 (NLT)

It's all for him.

The ultimate goal of the universe is to show the glory of God. Where is the glory of God? Just look around. Everything created by God reflects his glory in some way.

God's glory is best seen in Jesus Christ. He, the Light of the world, illuminates God's nature. Because of Jesus, we are no longer in the dark about what God is really like.  Jesus will give you everything you need to live for him

How can I bring glory to God?
  • By worshiping him
  • By loving other believers
  • By becoming like Christ
  • By serving others with our gifts
  • By telling others about him
 What will you live for?

Point to Ponder:  It's all about him.

Verse to Remember: "For everything comes from God alone. Everything lives by his power, and everything is for his glory." Romans 11:36 (LB)

Question to Consider: Where is my daily routine can I become more aware of God's glory?

Day 6 - Meditation and Breathing

I think it is safe to say that in all types of meditation, we are asked to think about our breathing.  Each breath we are given is God’s gift.

“It is in Him that we live and move and have our being”  (Acts 17:28)

We need to pay attention to our breathing.  Our stressful lives cause us to breathe rather shallowly in the upper chest area.  If we can learn to breathe deeply using our diaphragms, we can get more oxygen to our tissues and become more relaxed.

How do your shoulders feel right now?  They are always a give away for tension.  Shrug them up towards your ears and then lower them down very very slowly while breathing out.
Now, if you can, lie down for a few minutes, with a pillow under your thigh/knee area.  Notice where you are breathing.  Is it the upper part of your chest?  Maybe you could place a small folded towel on your upper stomach.  See if it rises and falls with your breathing.  Try and enhance that movement by breathing in a little longer and letting the towel rise, and then breathing out for as long as you can and letting your stomach(towel) collapse towards your backbone.  Try this for 2-3 breaths.

As you begin to get the idea of this deeper breathing, perhaps you could say the “Jesus Prayer”  Breathing in say “Jesus, son of David” and breathing out “have mercy on me a sinner”  By the way, breathing out should always take a little longer than breathing in.

Learning to breathe properly is one of the best and simple things that you can do for your body.  It promotes relaxation.  As we grow calmer, we can begin to listen to God’s voice and deepen our awareness of His love for us.

CHAPTER 6 - LIFE IS A TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT

To make the best use of your life, you must never forget two truths:

1. Compared with eternity, life is extremely brief
2. Earth is only a temporary residence

Earth is not our final home; we were created for something much better.

When life gets tough, when you're overwhelmed with doubt, or when you wonder if living for Christ is worth the effort, remember that you are not home yet. At death you won't leave home -- you'll go home!

Point to Ponder: The world is not my home.

Verse to Remember: "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV)

Question to Consider: How should the fact that life on earth is just a temporary assignment change the way I am living right now?

Day 5 - Throw out the Soda!

Why Day 5 and not Day 6 you may ask? Yesterday was Sunday and since Sundays celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the six Sundays that occur during Lent are not counted as part of the 40 days of Lent.  It is on Sundays that we reflect and meditate on the joy and happiness of the resurrection, however this does not mean that we stray from renewing our body.

It's time to start taking this 40 day renewal seriously. You may have started great last week and let this weekend slip away from you, or you've just gone into these 40 days casually since the beginning.  Remember your BIG WHY and start to take action in order to get results! Don't fret about the past but work towards a better tomorrow. A big change you need to make immediately is with your diet. More will be discussed this Wednesday at 6:00PM at Christ Lutheran about this topic and SO much more. But today is a great day to start working on what you are putting inside your body throughout the day.

-------------------------------------

Rule #1: Get rid of ALL soda, diet included

Regular soda contains extremely high amounts of refined sugar, whether it is cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Sugar causes severe inflammation in your arteries and cells and it travels through your body. At the root cause of almost any symptom or disease, you will find inflammation. Asthma, allergies, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel, Crohn's, heart disease, and numerous cancers all have an inflammatory component.

More and more research is showing the negative affects of drinking soda on a regular basis.

  • Research published in the Journal of the American Society Nephrology showed that people who consume soda regularly had a greatly increased risk of high blood pressure.  The risk was 77% percent higher in those consuming fructose-sweetened drinks on a daily basis. (J Am Soc Nephrol 21: 2010. doi: 10.1681/ASN.2009)
Diet soda is just as dangerous (if not more) than regular soda. Filled with harmful artificial sweeteners this type of soda is marketed as a healthier option, however recent research is showing otherwise:
  • Researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine recently discovered that diet soda may increase the risk for stroke, heart attack and brain hemorrhage. (Gandey,A. Diet soda may heighten risk for vascular events. Medscape Medical News. Feb 9, 2011)
There is plenty of research out there about the risks of drinking regular and diet soda. I recommend that you take some time and look into it some more.

And if you have already given up soda or have never started, get rid of the fruit juice! Fruit juices have high concentrations of sugar hidden in them. Not only from added sugar but from the fruit itself. Note to self: God intended us to eat one orange at a time, pulp and all. Not take 16 oranges, squeeze only the juices together and drink.

At class this Wednesday at 6:00PM you will learn about the 3 Dangers in our diet and how to eat "Food by God" vs. "Food by man". SEE YOU THERE!

The Purpose Driven Life - Finding Your Purpose
CHAPTER 5 - SEEING LIFE FROM GOD'S VIEW
The way you see your life shapes your life. How you define life determines your destiny. Your perspective will influence how you invest your time, spend you money, use your talents, and value your relationships. The Bible offers three metaphors that teach us God's view on life:

  • Life is a test
  • Life is a trust
  • Life is a temporary assignment
Point to Ponder: Life is a test and a trust.
Verse to Remember: "Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won't be faithful in large ones." Luke 16:10a

Questions to Consider: What has happened to me recently that I now realize was a test from God? What are the greatest matters God has entrusted to me?

Fitness - Don't wait for tomorrow

Today is the day to start your own exercise program.  You can't do anything about yesterday, but you can do something today and why wait until tomorrow.  Many people wait until Monday to start a program, I'm never quite sure, maybe they want one last piece of chocolate cake, or just one more pizza or even, "why waste a great weekend by exercising."  What ever the reason, people put off exercising for as long as possible.

In reality it should be part of our everyday life.  The benefits of consistent exercise over time has been well documented.  So, why do we put it off, it might be our approach to exercise or our perception of what an exercise program is, but no matter what the reason is we simply don't take care of ourselves.

These are some simple guidelines for starting your own program:

     1.  Start today
     2.  Start slowly, you can't get in shape in 24 hours, so don't try.  Look for long term results.
     3.  Keep it simple, start with  few exercises to avoid being overwhelmed.
     4.  Start with a minimum frequency, like beginning with just 2 days per week.  You can always add more days later.
     5.  Enjoy your activity

Follow these simple steps and you are well on your way to a rewarding change in your body and mind....and don't forget.....START TODAY.

Feel free to email or call me if you have specific questions:

The Purpose Driven Life - Finding Your Purpose

CHAPTER 4 - MADE TO LAST FOREVER

This life is not all there is. Life on earth is just the dress rehearsal before the real production. You will spend far more time on the other side of death -- in eternity -- than you will here.  At most, you will live a hundred years on earth, but you will spend forever in eternity.  Death is not your termination, but your transition into eternity, so there are eternal consequences to everything you do on earth.

One day Jesus will say, "Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world " Matthew 25:34 (NIV)

God has a purpose for your life on earth, but it doesn't end here. It's more than "the opportunity of a lifetime"; God offers you an opportunity beyond your lifetime.

Point to Ponder: There is more to life than just here and now.

Verse to Remember: "This world is fading away, along with everything it craves. But if you do the will of God, you will live forever." 1 John 2:17 (NLT)

Question to Consider: Since I was made to last forever, what is the one thing I should stop doing and the one thing I should start doing today?

The First Step - Water

How important is water to our body?
  • Your entire body is estimated to be about 60 to 70% water.
  • Your brain is approximately 76% water
  • Blood that transport nutrients is 82% water
  • Lungs that provide your oxygen are 90% water
  • Muscles that move your body are 75% water
Our health relies heavily on the quality and quantity of the water we drink.

Water is also a great detoxing agent in our body, helping not only your cells stay hydrated, but flushing out the kidneys, liver, and spleen. Drinking water has been shown to help people lose weight, reduce headaches, increase energy levels and more. So, why is it so hard to drink water?

The problem is we have gotten out of habit. With all the options of soda, juices, and flavored drinks we tend to forget that our body craves the most natural of all substances, water.  Want an easy first step in this 40 day renewal?  Here it is in 2 simple rules:

Rule #1: At minimum, drink half of your body weight (lbs) in ounces of water per day. (i.e. a person weighing 160 pounds would need to drink 80 ounces of water at MINIMUM to keep the body at the proper hydration.)

Rule #2: Drink at least one glass of water (two or three is optimal) in the morning upon waking. You are the most dehydrated and full of toxins in the morning. Help your body rehydrate and flush those toxins out as soon possible. You will see improved concentration and energy to start your day! Drink the water before doing anything else in your morning routine.

That's it. Start there and you'll see changes in your health immediately! Keep a calendar/log book to make sure you drinking enough water every day.

Say to yourself, "I can do this!" three times.

Abundant health and blessings to you today!

The Purpose Driven Life - Finding Your Purpose

CHAPTER 3 - WHAT DRIVES YOUR LIFE?

"The man without a purpose is like a ship without a rudder -- a waif, a nothing, a no man"
                                                                                         - Thomas Carlyle

Everyone's life is driven by something. Right now you may be driven by a problem, a pressure, or a deadline. Here are the five most common driving forces: guilt, resentment and anger, fear, materialism, and need for approval. Notice how these are all focused on oneself and not on others.

Nothing matters more than knowing God's purposes for your life, and nothing can compensate for not knowing them.

There are 5 great benefits of living a purpose-driven life:

1. Knowing your purpose gives meaning to your life
2. Knowing your purpose simplifies your life
3. Knowing your purpose focuses your life
4. Knowing your purpose motivates your life
5. Knowing your purpose prepares you for eternity

The greatest tragedy is not death, but a life without purpose.

Point to Ponder: Living on purpose is the path to peace.

Verse to Remember: "You, Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you." Isaiah 26:3

Question to Consider: What would my family and friends say is the driving force of my life? What do I want it to be?

Day 2 - How to Get Results

1. Your Belief System -  What are your main beliefs; personally, physically, socially, spiritually? How strong are your beliefs? Do you believe in yourself? Do you believe that change is possible? Do you believe that God gave you the most amazing vessel (your body) and that he put all health and healing inside of it?

2. Take Action - Whatever you believe in will fuel your actions throughout the day, month, and years. If you believe that eating organic is good for you, then you will take action by purchasing organic vegetables and products over non-organic ones. When faced with a choice or temptation to buy non-organic you will choose the organic because your belief system says to. Those that fall into temptation and stray away have a weak belief system and need to strengthen it in order to reach their wanted results.

3. Results - the amount of action you take will directly influence the results you will see. Your results may not always be what you think or want but may show up in different ways. For example, by eating organic foods, your goal was to lose a certain amount of weight.  However, even though you didn't lose as much weight as you wanted you now have more energy, less brain fog, and feel better overall.  By seeing results, your belief system is strengthened and you will take even more action, which will fuel more results.

ACTION STEP

Take time today and meditate/visualize on what your beliefs are. Maybe you need to write them down in order to clarify them. Which of your beliefs do you know need strengthening? Look at your goals that you wrote down before starting this 40 Day Renewal and link your belief systems with what you want to accomplish.  Strengthen your beliefs and then take MASSIVE ACTION and you will see MASSIVE RESULTS!

The Purpose Driven Life - Finding Your Purpose

CHAPTER 2 - YOU ARE NOT AN ACCIDENT

I am your Creator. You were in my care even before you were born. Isaiah 44:2a

Long before you were conceived by your parents, you were conceived in the mind of God.  If there was no God, we would all be "accidents" the result of astronomical random chance in the universe. Your life would have no purpose or significance. There would be no right or wrong and no hope beyond your brief years here on earth.

BUT, there is a God who made you for a reason, and your life has profound meaning! We discover that meaning and purpose only when we make God the reference point in our lives.

Point to Ponder: I am not an accident

Verse to Remember: Isaiah 44:2

Question to Consider: I know that God uniquely created me. What areas of my personality, background, and physical appearance am I struggling to accept?

DAY 1 IS HERE!

Today is the "official" start date of our 40 day renewal, February 22nd - Ash Wednesday.  Please make sure you read Pastor Chris's blog posting, Why Ashes?  Here is an excerpt from Pastor Chris's blog post that helps explain why Ash Wednesday is so important.

"The first thing that Ash Wednesday does is it connects us to the life of Jesus. Ash Wednesday begins the church season of Lent and during this season of Lent we journey with Jesus to the cross. It is not a pleasant journey and it is not supposed to be...The challenge here is if we do not understand what Jesus went through to get to Easter morning can we fully appreciate his sacrifice? Ash Wednesday also reminds us that there is something more..."

Let's dive into this 40 day renewal with a positive mindset, big why, and vision on why we are doing this in the first place. The deeper you dive in, stay connected, and sacrifice throughout these next 40 days, the greater your reward will be.

We all know there are things we need to change, so what is holding you back?  What roadblocks prevent you from reaching your God-given purpose?  Do you even know what your purpose is?

A Journey with Purpose

Have you ever wondered what your purpose is?
Why was I put on this earth?
Am I fulfilling my purpose?

For the next 40 days we will examine these questions by reading through the book, The Purpose Driven Life, by Rick Warren. Each day we will ask you the questions to ponder from the end of the daily chapter.  We encourage you to read the chapter on your own and meditate on the scripture and questions at the end.  We recommend you pick up a copy of the book and read through it for the next 40 days.  The public libraries will have copies, and perhaps even our CLC library has a copy or two to lend out.  Let's get started!

(the following is an excerpt from the book, The Purpose Driven Life)

Getting the Most from This Book

This is more than a book; it is a guide to a 40-day spiritual journey that will enable you to discover the answer to life's most important question: What on earth am I here for?  Today the average life span is 25,550 days.  Don't you think that it would be a wise use of time to set aside 40 of those days to figure out what God wants you to do with the rest of them?

In the Bible, whenever God wanted to prepare someone for his purposes, he took 40 days:
  • Noah's life was transformed by 40 days of rain
  • Moses was transformed by 40 days on Mount Sinai
  • The spies were transformed by 40 days in the Promised Land
  • David was transformed by Goliath's 40-day challenge
  • Elijah was transformed when God gave him 40 days of strength from a single meal
  • The entire city of Nineveh was transformed when God gave the people 40 days to change.
  • Jesus was empowered by 40 days in the wilderness
  • The disciples were transformed by 40 days with Jesus after his resurrection
The next 40 days will transform your life if you are ready!

CHAPTER 1 - IT ALL STARTS WITH GOD

It's not about you.  The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, peace of mind, or happiness.  You were born by His purpose for His purpose.  Too many times we ask self-centered questions like: What do I want to be?  What should I do with my life?  What are my goals, my ambitions, my dreams for my future?

You cannot arrive at your life's purpose by starting with a focus on yourself.  You were made by God and for God.  How do you find the purpose God has called for you?  By revelation. The easiest way to discover the purpose of an invention is to ask the creator.  The Bible is our Owner's Manual, everything we need can be found in it.  To discover your purpose you must turn to God's Word, not the world's wisdom.

Ephesians 1:11 This verse gives us three insights into your purpose:

1. You discover your identity and purpose through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
2. God was thinking of you long before you ever thought about him.
3. The purpose of your life fits into a much larger, cosmic purpose that God has designed for eternity.

-----------------------------------

DAY 1 - FINDING MY PURPOSE

Point to Ponder:  It's not about me.

Verse to Remember: "Everything got started in Him and finds its purpose in Him." Colossians 1:16b

Question to consider:  In spite of all the advertising around me, how can I remind myself that life is really about living for God, not myself?

Kick-off Recap & RECIPES!

Pastor Scott opening the kick-off session.
In case you missed it, this past Sunday was our 40 Day Renewal kick-off.  We had a good turn out, about 60 attendees.  However, our goal as a congregation is for our entire church to be involved in this Lenten Renewal!  On a normal Sunday, we have about 1,000 attendees to the three services -- this means we didn't have even 10% of our active church members at our kick-off event.  Come on, CLC, we can do better!  It's not too late to get involved (or encourage a friend or family member to take part)!!  This is why our coaches for these 40 days have put together this website (coaches names and details will be added, coming soon!).  This website is a place for you to visit daily from now until Easter.  We want you to take away the health tip for the day and meditate on the "Find Your Purpose" verse of the day.  We'll be sharing videos, inspiration, recipes, devotions, and so much more.  It all begins tomorrow with "DAY 1" from Dr. Dave!

Remember, this 40 Day Renewal is not just about health, not just about losing weight, or just about you.  What it is about is renewing and rebuilding the temple God gave you.  It is ALL about a renewing of one's self to drive this church community as a whole to the next era at Christ Lutheran in the year to come.  It is ALL about rebuilding the temple God gave you so that you can be a driving force as we near completion of our new building and a fresh start at CLC.  We hope you will encourage others to join you on this journey.  Find a buddy to support you along the way.  An accountability partner will make a world of difference as you gain health and grow closer to Him together!

In case you missed Sunday's kick-off, you can download the Goals card and Action Steps worksheet here and here.  We highly recommend filling these out before tomorrow.  The Goals card will define you "Big Why" (what drives you to do what you do) and overall main goal that you want to acheive in these 40 days.  The Action Steps are the things you are committing to doing over these next 40 days to bring you to your goal successfully.  Start it off right!  And feel free to make adjustments along the way as needed.

Here are the recipes, as promised, with pictures so you know what we had at the kick-off event and can recreate in your kitchen.  Remember, these are "foods from God," healing foods that will provide nutrition to your body in the way you were designed.

40 Day Lenten Renewal

God is on the move at Christ Lutheran.  Do you feel it?  Attendance is growing, giving is generous, outreach is expanding, lives are transformed and the new building is coming.  We can feel God’s spirit all around us.

God is preparing us so that we can make an even greater impact in our community and throughout the world.  We want to make sure that we are ready in our body, mind and spirit.

Through this construction period, we are calling for a congregational preparedness for whatever plans God has for us.  We are starting off with focus on the temple God gave each one of us, our bodies.

Lent 2012  -  BODY

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit?” (1 Cor. 6:19)

Through caring for our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit, we want to be prepared for this new
temple for the worship of God. This 40 day regiment will include diet, exercise, and cleansing so that with caring for our bodies we can be ready for God’s work with greater energy, increased health and clearer sense of purpose.
